Wanderfolk Distillery Launches Tallbird American Whiskey

Wanderfolk Distillery has launched Tallbird American Whiskey, a blend of straight bourbons made for cocktails. The Guthrie, Oklahoma-based producer announced the release on September 28, and the whiskey is on sale online and in five US states.

Tallbird blends straight, seven-year-old bourbons from Bardstown Bourbon Company in Kentucky and TN Distilling in Tennessee.

Wanderfolk ages the blend in Guthrie in 53-gallon New American White Oak barrels with a Level 3-4 char. The finished whiskey is 93 proof (46.5% ABV).

The brand pitches Tallbird as a mixing whiskey for the Old Fashioned, Manhattan and Sour. It calls the liquid “rich and approachable whiskey that was tailor-made for classic cocktails.”

“We’re committed to creating spirits as unique and distinctive as those who enjoy them,” said Jeffrey Cole, head distiller at Wanderfolk Distillery. “Tallbird is a Whiskey of the Golden Age – a time when a well-aged bourbon wasn’t something you paid a premium for,” Cole added. “Good doesn’t have to be expensive.”

Cole was the founding president of both the USBG OKC chapter and the Oklahoma Distillers’ Guild. He has opened more than a dozen bars across the Midwest.

According to the official notes from the brand, the nose has sweet marzipan, cardamom, citrus and tropical mango. Butterscotch, graham crackers and a hint of leather follow on the palate. The finish is “luscious and sweet with the creaminess of a tres leches dessert.”

The Tallbird name comes from nicknames for aircraft used in sonic boom tests during the 1950s and ’60s.

On the label, an American cowboy rides one of the aircraft like a mechanical bull. The company said the artwork shows “the brand’s Oklahoma roots and playful side.”

Tallbird is sold through the brand’s website and at craft spirits retailers in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. A 750ml bottle has a suggested retail price of $25 (£19 / ₹2,399).

Wanderfolk also plans to open its tasting room at 124 E. Oklahoma Avenue in Guthrie later this fall.

The company describes itself as Oklahoma’s first legal distillery. Its range also includes Garden Society and Prairie Wolf Spirits, which cover gin, vodka and coffee liqueur, plus Same Old Moses bourbon.
