There are whiskies you admire and whiskies you stockpile. The Glen Scotia 15-Year-Old falls firmly into the second category. After this bottle tied for first place in a blind shootout of 15-year-old whiskies on the Whiskey Rant, I knew it deserved a proper review.
Having already sung the praises of the Glen Scotia 18 in two separate reviews over the past couple of years, I came in with high expectations. This bottle met every single one of them.
Let’s start with what Glen Scotia is doing right. This is bottled at 46%, unchill filtered, and with no added color. That’s the kind of transparency and quality commitment that earns my respect immediately. The nose is super inviting: malty gingerbread, a touch of dark chocolate-covered cherries, and beautiful tangerine notes layered over a subtle, briny saltiness. That salinity is classic Campbeltown character, born from the distillery’s proximity to the ocean. There’s a whisper of peat in there too, though it plays hide and seek depending on the day. On this particular tasting, the peat stayed quiet and let the sweetness and fruit do the talking.
On the palate, the experience shifts into something I can only describe as a fruit salad with attitude. Tangerines, cherries, maybe some raspberries, all wrapped in a tartness that gives the whisky a sweet-sour quality reminiscent of Sour Patch Kids. The viscosity is excellent, delivering a creamy, malty mouthfeel that makes each sip feel substantial without being heavy. Honestly, it reminds me of older Highland Parks from an era when that distillery was really firing on all cylinders. Highland Park doesn’t taste like this anymore. Thank goodness Glen Scotia 15 does.
What strikes me most is the transformation Glen Scotia has undergone. I bought a bottle years ago, and it didn’t leave much of an impression. But the current expression, with its new style bottling, is a different animal entirely.
Something has changed at this distillery, and the results are dramatically better. This is a whisky that works anytime, anywhere. It’s easy on the nose, easy on the palate, and checks literally every box I look for in a single malt.
I’m giving the Glen Scotia 15 an 88, which is a very strong score for an original bottling at this age and price point. If push comes to shove, I still lean slightly toward the GlenAllachie 15 as my top pick in this age bracket, but the margin is razor-thin.
I’ve already secured backup bottles of this one because the market is unpredictable, and when something offers this combination of quality and value, you don’t hesitate.
