Great Jones Distillery may have opened as recently as 2021, but they have just released a 10-year-old bourbon. As with their standard straight bourbon, the 10-year old whiskey is made with corn, rye, and malted barley grown exclusively in the Hudson Valley, New York. The exact percentages of each grain is unstated. The whiskey was aged in new American oak barrels in upstate New York where cold winters and hot summers encouraged strong interaction with the wood. Additionally, the bourbon is bottled at higher proof than their regular offerings, and we’re excited to see how it compares. Let’s pour a glass and give it a try.
Right off the bat, it is obvious that this is a well-constructed bourbon. The nose shows bold, complex, integrated aromas of caramel, orange pith, red hot candy, oak, and cherry cola. The palate follows suit beautifully, with caramel covered orange pith coming first and cinnamon and red hots hitting midpalate. The delightfully long finish brings a touch of mocha and some drying oak. The alcohol is surprisingly well hidden considering the high proof, and although it can handle water, I preferred it neat with all of the flavors at full strength.
I was originally put off by the high price tag of this bourbon, and to be honest, I’m still a bit put off by it. While too pricey for a 10 year old product, this is fantastic bourbon and certainly my favorite release from Great Jones Distillery to date.
105 proof.
