Established in 1895 in Elgin, Scotland, Gordon & MacPhail has earned a reputation as one of whisky’s great custodians – selecting, maturing, and bottling spirit from distilleries across Scotland with an laser-like focus on cask quality and long-term aging.
The Origins of the Cask Strength Series
While Gordon & MacPhail had long released whiskies at natural strength, the formal Cask Strength range was introduced in 1988, building on earlier concepts such as the Original Cask line.
For much of the 20th century, Scotch whisky was typically diluted to around 40% ABV, influenced by wartime restrictions and shifting consumer preferences. The launch of the Cask Strength series marked a conscious return to tradition—presenting whisky exactly as it exists in the cask, often at significantly higher strengths.
At its heart, the series aimed to: –
- Showcase single malts at their natural ABV (commonly 50–60%+)
- Emphasise the relationship between spirit and cask over time
- Provide access to rare and closed distilleries
Each release was drawn from carefully selected casks, overseen by generations of the Urquhart family, whose expertise has shaped Gordon & MacPhail’s legacy for over a century.
Evolution and Transition
The Cask Strength series remained a cornerstone of the company’s range for decades before being discontinued in spring 2018.
Rather than retiring the concept entirely, Gordon & MacPhail absorbed it into a revitalised Connoisseurs Choice collection. From that point onward, cask strength releases continued under this updated label, featuring single cask, natural-strength expressions for modern collectors and enthusiasts.
