Rakshit N Jagdale, managing director of Amrut Distilleries, has received a Lifetime Achievement Award and Hall of Fame induction at the Icons of Whisky Awards in London. The honor recognizes his 25-year role in building India’s single malt whisky category and positioning the country as a credible force in the global spirits industry.

The Icons of Whisky Awards, organized by Whisky Magazine, are among the most respected accolades in the international whisky industry.

Amrut Distilleries, based in Bengaluru, India, is widely credited with launching India’s first single malt whisky. Under Jagdale’s leadership, the company expanded from a pioneering outlier into a standard-bearer for the Indian single malt category, building a global footprint and accumulating numerous international honors.

The press release from Amrut describes Jagdale as “the principal architect of India’s whisky renaissance—one who gave the category global credibility and a distinctly Indian voice.”

According to the company, the Indian single malt luxury category has grown from its very first case sold to nearly 700,000 cases, translating to an estimated value of approximately $120 million (₹1,000 crore).

“At a time when India was scarcely considered in the global single malt conversation, Rakshit Jagdale dared to challenge convention,” the company stated. It described his early efforts as “quiet defiance—carrying samples across continents, engaging skeptics, and insisting that India could stand shoulder to shoulder with the traditional whisky capitals of the world.”

Jagdale’s work was guided by the legacy of his father, Neelakanta Rao Jagdale, and driven by a central question: “How do we elevate what my fellow Indians consume?”

The company said his success “prompted global players to enter the Indian single malt space and accelerate the journey of premiumization across the category.” What began as a singular pursuit “gradually transformed into a broader movement—one that inspired distillers across the country to reimagine both ambition and craft.”

Amrut’s portfolio has steadily expanded since its flagship single malt first gained international attention. The brand received widespread global recognition after whisky critic Jim Murray awarded Amrut Fusion the third-best whisky in the world in 2010, a landmark moment for Indian whisky on the world stage.
