Produced by Heaven Hill, Elijah Craig Small Batch has become something of a benchmark for accessible Kentucky bourbon, balancing sweetness, oak and fruit with remarkable consistency.
The history surrounding Reverend Elijah Craig is well known. Depending on which version you believe, he either pioneered the use of charred oak barrels or simply became associated with them over time. Whatever the truth, the whisky carrying his name has earned its own reputation on merit rather than mythology.
The first thing that strikes me about Elijah Craig is how much brighter it feels. Fresh honeycomb, lime zest and polished oak lead the nose before vanilla pods, sandalwood and gentle milk chocolate begin to develop. Compared with Wild Turkey, there’s less immediate power but noticeably more refinement.
The palate follows the same path. Classic bourbon flavours of vanilla and caramel remain at its core, but they’re joined by grilled pineapple, apricot, peaches and crisp green apple, giving the whiskey a freshness that keeps every sip lively. Oak and spice build steadily through the mid palate without ever dominating, while the finish remains dry, clean and pleasantly warming.

The fruit feels brighter, the oak more integrated and the sweetness better controlled. It’s the bottle I find myself lingering over rather than reaching for another pour quite so quickly.
I’ve poured both blind for friends on several occasions, and the results are always interesting. Those who normally drink Scotch often gravitate towards Elijah Craig because of its elegance and structure. Those who already love bourbon almost always smile the moment Wild Turkey appears. Neither reaction surprises me.
So, Which Should You Buy?
If you’re buying your very first serious bottle of bourbon, I’d steer you towards Wild Turkey 101. It captures everything people expect from Kentucky bourbon. Vanilla, caramel, spice, oak and enough proof to remind you that you’re drinking something with real character. It also performs brilliantly in cocktails, making it one of the most versatile bottles available at its price.
If you’ve already discovered bourbon and you’re looking for something a little more layered, Elijah Craig Small Batch edges ahead. It’s the bottle I return to most often when I want to sit quietly with a glass and pay attention. Every revisit seems to reveal another small detail, whether it’s a little more orchard fruit, a touch more chocolate or another subtle layer of oak.
So who wins? On value alone, they’re almost impossible to separate. On personality, they’re worlds apart. Wild Turkey 101 is the extrovert. Bold, confident and immediately engaging. Elijah Craig Small Batch is quieter. It asks a little more of your attention but rewards it with greater finesse and balance.
If I could only keep one bottle on the shelf, I’d give Elijah Craig Small Batch the narrowest of victories. Not because it delivers more flavour, but because it delivers more discovery. Months later, it still has a habit of surprising me.
That, for me, is what keeps a whiskey worth coming back to.
