House of Hazelwood has announced the complete sell-out of its limited-edition Year of the Horse twin whisky set, priced at £15,000 ($20,466). The collection, limited to just 50 sets worldwide, featured a 1978 Blended Scotch Whisky and a 1990 Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, both drawn from casks laid down in previous Years of the Horse.

The 1990 Blended Malt consisted of Speyside malts matured in European oak first and second fill sherry butts, with a finishing period in a single Pedro Ximénez sherry butt.

The 1978 Blended Scotch combined Lowland grain and Speyside malt matured in refill American oak, then finished in Oloroso sherry casks.

Each set was presented in a bespoke elm wood cabinet handcrafted by Scottish designer Paul Hodgkiss Designs, using wind-felled trees from the gardens of Hazelwood House. The cabinets featured a hand-engraved horse motif and a secret opening mechanism unlocked by a concealed button.

“The Year of the Horse holds a special resonance for us — it represents energy, perseverance, and triumph, values that have guided the guardians of our inventory of aged Scotch whisky through generations,” said Jonathan Gibson, director of House of Hazelwood.

“Through the great breadth and depth of our inventory, we are able to offer something truly timeless — two magnificent whiskies that bridge heritage and celebration, presented in a cabinet that embodies the same enduring spirit.”

House of Hazelwood maintains what it describes as “the greatest inventory of aged scotch whisky held anywhere in the world,” spanning seven decades and every corner of Scotland.

The collection originated from stocks laid down by generations of the Gordon family for special occasions and personal consumption.

The whiskies are stored in warehouses across Scotland, with a portion held in traditional dunnage warehousing near Dufftown in Speyside.

This release marked one of the rarest offerings from House of Hazelwood to date, continuing the brand’s focus on ultra-premium, limited-edition releases that celebrate significant cultural occasions.
