The Macallan Folio Series has become one of the most recognisable modern collections in Scotch whisky — elegant packaging, nostalgic storytelling, and an unmistakable link to the brand’s creative past. Yet in 2025, it’s time to ask an honest question: are these bottles still a sound investment, or have they drifted into the realm of overhyped collectibles?
For me, the answer lies in separating admiration from analysis. I love what the Folios represent, they celebrate the advertising genius of David Holmes and Nick Salaman, whose work helped define Macallan’s personality decades ago. The design is clever, the concept cohesive, and the nod to Macallan’s creative heritage gives these releases real soul. But if we strip away that emotion and look at the fundamentals, age, rarity, and market performance, the picture changes.
The Folios are non-age-statement whiskies produced in significant numbers, likely around 5,000 bottles per edition. That immediately caps their rarity. The liquid inside, while respectable, isn’t particularly exceptional, I’d value it around the £200–£300 mark. Their investment credentials rely almost entirely on presentation and narrative. In other words, what drives desirability here isn’t scarcity or quality, but story.
Then there’s the data. Early Folios, especially Folio 1, once fetched upwards of £16,000. Today, those prices have halved. The pattern looks less like steady appreciation and more like a speculative bubble. These bottles soared because people believed they would keep soaring. And as with any market, when hype outpaces fundamentals, correction follows.
Still, it would be unfair to dismiss the series entirely. The Folios have brought new collectors into the whisky world, blending nostalgia with artistry in a way few modern releases achieve. They’re wonderful objects, just not dependable investments. If you can buy them at release price and enjoy owning a piece of Macallan’s creative history, you won’t regret it. But if you’re chasing profits, you’re probably too late to the party.
What do you think, are the Folios misunderstood, or simply overvalued?
