Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers has launched a new expression from its Old Perth range, introducing an Amontillado Sherry Cask Matured Blended Malt. This new whisky breaks away from the category’s typical Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez dominance. The limited edition release, bottled at 52.8% ABV, is now available across the UK, EU, and select international markets for £58. Find your nearest stockist here.
The expression showcases the drier, more savory character of Amontillado sherry casks, which undergo a unique dual maturation process first under flor yeast and then through oxidative aging. This approach delivers a markedly different profile compared to the sweeter, richer notes typically associated with sherry cask maturation.

Master Blender Graeme Mackeddie crafted the blend using Speyside single malts, many sourced from distilleries still employing traditional worm tub condensers. The whisky underwent initial maturation in American and European oak sherry butts, with a component drawn from Old Perth’s Solera system.
“Amontillado casks offer something rare and compelling – structure, restraint, and this incredible nutty elegance,” said Graeme Mackeddie, Master Blender at Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers. “We wanted to build a whisky that captures that nuance and takes Old Perth in a slightly unexpected, but still unmistakably sherried, direction.”
The spirit was then re-racked into first-fill Amontillado sherry casks for nearly three years of finishing at the distillery’s Aberargie warehouse, followed by a final marrying phase in Amontillado wood.
Award-Winning Portfolio Continues to Grow
The official tasting notes for the Old Perth Amontillado Sherry Cask Matured Blended Malt describe a layered and refined malt featuring hazelnut, almond, dried apricot, and amaretti biscuit, supported by subtle oxidative tones and a dry, nut-forward finish. The bottling maintains natural color and is non-chill filtered, with production limited to a small batch from nine hogsheads and six sherry butts.
This launch follows Old Perth’s strong performance at the 2025 International Wine & Spirit Competition, where the brand secured four medals. Old Perth Cask Strength earned Silver with 92 points for its “velvety texture and warming spice,” while Old Perth 12 Year Old also received Silver with 90 points. Both The Original and Double Sherry Wood expressions captured Bronze medals, reinforcing the brand’s reputation for high-quality sherried blended malts.
The Amontillado expression represents Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers’ continued exploration of specialized cask types, offering whisky enthusiasts a sophisticated alternative to mainstream sherry cask releases while maintaining Old Perth’s commitment to traditional maturation methods.
