Specialist whisky company Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has unveiled a remarkable 42-year-old Bowmore 1982 single malt as part of their exclusive Rarest Reserve portfolio.

The expression originates from Islay’s oldest working distillery and showcases more than four decades of careful maturation.

The whisky’s journey began in October 1982, spending its entire maturation period in an ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry hogshead. This extended aging process has yielded a deep, resinous gold-coloured spirit bottled at cask strength of 50.8% ABV, making it one of the oldest Bowmore releases in Duncan Taylor’s history.

The Rarest Reserve collection represents Duncan Taylor’s most exclusive offerings from their most prized casks. The 42-year-old Bowmore is presented in the collection’s signature striking gold bar packaging, bottled in a 100ml container. This bottle size debuted last year with the company’s 33 and 52-year-old Macallan releases.

The smaller bottles allow whisky enthusiasts to experience rare, aged expressions without the significant investment required for full-sized bottles.

    Cask Maturation & Tasting Notes

The extended maturation in Pedro Ximénez sherry cask has created a beautifully balanced whisky that showcases both Islay’s characteristic peat influence and the sweetness from the sherry wood. Decades of aging have developed complex layers combining subtle peat smoke with maritime elements and dried fruit characteristics.

On the nose, the whisky presents ripe orchard fruit alongside smokehouse sweetness and delicate peat smoke. The palate delivers maritime smoke balanced with milk chocolate notes, whilst the finish proves long-lasting and remarkably smooth for such an aged expression.

“Following the success of the Macallan Rarest Reserve last year, we have plans to release a couple of our finest whiskies this year, starting with the Bowmore,” commented CEO Shawn Smith. “Bowmore acolytes will love the premise of this collection as it gives them the opportunity to savour our rarer malts at a fraction of the price of a full bottle.”

The Bowmore 1982 Rarest Reserve carries a recommended retail price of £816 and is available exclusively through The Spirits Embassy online.
