The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) has unveiled its newest experimental offering – the ‘Two to One’ series – featuring ultra small-batch bottlings that marry two single malt casks from the same distillery before bottling.
Each whisky in the innovative series has traveled a unique path from cask to bottle, resulting in diverse styles, textures, and flavors that showcase the art of whisky blending and maturation.
SMWS ‘Two to One’ Whiskies
The first six bottles in the SMWS ‘Two to One’ series were launched on April 4th, with prices ranging from £75 to £90. Among the inaugural releases is the 11-year-old Society No. 10.284: ‘Ginger Rollmop Sushi Phantasmagoria’ (£80), a peated expression offering notes of treacle scones, pickled sushi ginger, and hot smoked salmon.
This particular whisky began its journey in two bourbon hogsheads before being transferred at five years old – one portion to a first-fill American oak PX hogshead and the other to a second-fill oloroso hogshead. The contents were then married together prior to bottling.
Other offerings in the initial release include the 15-year-old ‘Moroccan Pastilla Anyone?’ (£80), a spicy & sweet bottling matured in New American HTMC and first-fill Spanish oak oloroso casks. The 16-year-old ‘The Fruit Merchant’ (£90) combines New American oak HTMC hogshead and first-fill American oak oloroso hogshead casks to create a sweet, fruity & mellow profile.
Rounding out the ‘Two to One’ collection are ‘Interdimensional Patisserie’ (£85), ‘Strawberry Sumac Scones’ (£80), and the tropical-forward ‘I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts’ (£75), which unusually combines whisky from a refill Trinidadian rum barrel with that from a New American oak HTMC barrel.
Creative Exploration
“The concept is straightforward: Two to One means taking two casks of single malt from the same distillery and seeing how they can fit together to create an ultra small-batch bottling,” explained Euan Campbell, Head of Whisky Creation at SMWS. “The whiskies could have different ages and have undergone maturation in different wood types before being married and bottled at natural cask strength.”
Campbell added: “This is a new adventure for us. The whisky in each bottle has a different journey through a range of cask types to create something unique and delicious. We love the end result and we hope everyone else does!”
Additional bottlings in the SMWS ‘Two to One’ series are scheduled for release throughout the summer months.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society continues its tradition of flavor-focused releases with this series, adding to its reputation for exceptional single cask bottlings and experimental offerings that provide members with exclusive access to distinctive whiskies.
