The Glasgow Distillery has unveiled three limited-edition single malt whiskies finished in rare wine casks, marking its most experimental releases to date as part of the award-winning Small Batch Series.
The collection features one peated and two unpeated expressions, each aged for five years and finished for one year and ten months in distinctive wine casks. The extended finishing period demonstrates the distillery’s commitment to innovative maturation techniques.
The Glasgow Distillery’s New Wine Cask Finishes
The first release, Glasgow 1770 Constantia Wine Cask Matured, showcases the influence of South African dessert wine casks on unpeated spirit. Bottled at 56.6% ABV, the whisky delivers fresh apricot, peach, pink grapefruit, and clementine notes, balanced with manuka honey and dark chocolate. Only 980 bottles will enter the market.
Glasgow 1770 Syrah Wine Cask Matured takes its character from Greek Syrah red wine casks sourced from Evia island. The 59.3% ABV expression combines blackberry, raspberry, strawberry jam, and black cherry with dark chocolate and pink peppercorn. This release is restricted to 652 bottles.
The collection’s sole peated offering, Glasgow 1770 Pineau des Charentes Wine Cask Matured, begins with mainland peat-smoked malted barley. Following initial maturation in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, the whisky spent its finishing period in French Pineau des Charentes wine casks. The 58.7% ABV whisky reveals toffee apple, maple smoked ham, walnuts, orange zest, and floral green peppercorn spice across just 303 bottles.
“At The Glasgow Distillery, we are always looking for ways to push boundaries and explore new dimensions of flavour,” said Mike Hayward, founder of The Glasgow Distillery. “These three releases showcase the remarkable impact that different wine casks can have on our whisky, bringing bold and gratifying flavour characteristics.”
Decade of Innovation
The experimental releases coincide with the distillery’s recent 10-year anniversary of whisky production. Hayward notes the timing: “Having recently celebrated 10-years of whisky production, it seems fitting to release perhaps our most experimental whiskies yet whilst reflecting on a decade of innovation, craftsmanship, and dedication to creating exceptional single malts.”
The three whiskies are launching today (May 13th) in the UK and Germany, priced at £59 in the UK market. Distribution will include The Glasgow Distillery website and whisky retailers nationwide.
