American independent bottler, Single Cask Nation, has announced its latest collection of single cask scotch whiskies. The limited edition bottlings are set to be released in whisky shops across 23 states beginning this March.
“Bottled by whisky geeks for whiskey geeks,” the collection showcases exceptional single malt scotch whiskies from three different whisky regions: the Highlands, Speyside, and Islay.
Single Cask Nation’s New Scotch Whiskies
“Independent bottling is a longtime tradition in Scotland—one that gave rise to the global fascination and reputation of single malt whisky itself many now take for granted,” says Joshua Hatton, co-founder of Single Cask Nation. “As independent bottlers we don’t have a specific flavor profile we can hang our hats on. In fact, as bottlers of single casks our aim is to always ensure that there is no consistency in flavor profile from cask to cask/barrel to barrel, only consistency in quality. These eight bottlings highlight distilleries many people are not familiar with, but should be. Add to this, some of the cask maturation we’ve focused on with these releases helps to broaden the array of flavors in remarkable ways. There’s a flavor ride here for any and all interested whisky lovers.”
The collection fatures eight different single cask whiskies. The details are as follows:
- Macduff 16 Year Old (Speyside) – (57.50% ABV; 700ml; $150 SRP)
12 years in ex-bourbon, 4 years in American Oak Oloroso hogshead
“A massively rich and warming cask of Macduff that not only highlights what we feel the distillery does best but is also, perhaps, one meant for comfort.”
- Ruadh Mhor 14 Year Old (Highland) – (53.60% ABV; 700ml; $150 SRP)
14 years in refill ex-bourbon hogshead
“We enjoy peated whiskies best when they’re matured in refill bourbon casks. This ensures the cask never overtakes the beauty of the spirit the distillery worked so hard to perfect. Ruadh Mhor is wild and wacky and surely one for those who love a good Ledaig, Croftengea, or younger Craigellachie.”
- Knockdhu 14 Year Old (Speyside) – (58.40% ABV; 700ml; $120 SRP)
11 years in ex-bourbon, 3 years in Spanish oak Oloroso hogshead
“Casks of Knockdhu are not easy to find. Most of the liquid the distillery produces either goes to blends or into the distillery’s own proprietary “anCnoc” bottlings. Highlighting whisky from this distillery has been something we’ve longed to do for some time!”
- Inchmurrin 14 Year Old (Highland) – (54.30% ABV; 700ml; $145 SRP)
11 years in ex-bourbon, 3 years in new toasted oak barrique
“The Loch Lomond distillery produces around 14 different spirit types. Inchmurrin is Loch Lomond’s, non-peated, massively fruity, spirit. Known for its notes of bright citrus with a rich, malty backbone, this whisky is further enhanced by the toasted oak which frames the spirit with delicate notes of toasted oak and vanilla.”
- Bunnahabhain “Staoisha” (Islay) – (58.90% ABV; 700ml; $110 SRP)
6 years in ex-bourbon, 4 years in American oak PX Sherry hogshead
“This one is a bit of a conundrum. Staoisha is Bunnahabhain’s heavily peated spirit but the PX cask maturation rounds out the high levels of peat with big, rich fruits, generous floral notes, and brings forth a fruity jamminess that we found impossible to not fall in love with.”
- Pluscarden Abbey 16 Year Old (Speyside) – (60.90% ABV; 700ml; $170 SRP)
13 years in ex-bourbon, 3 years in refill PX Sherry hogshead
“While we can’t list the distillery name on the label this cask of whisky does a fine job of highlighting the rich, peppery quality inherent to this distillery’s spirit. The refill PX brings layers of dark fruits and caramel.”
- Auchroisk 13 Year Old (Speyside) – (59.50% ABV; 700ml; $140 SRP)
8 years in ex-bourbon, 5 years in ex-Jamaican rum barrel
“Auchroisk has become an in-house favorite of all of us here at SCN. Much like Wild Turkey here in the states or Ben Nevis from across the pond, Auchroisk has got a natural funkiness that people are drawn to. Add to this, 5yrs in a 1st fill Jamaican Rum cask has done wonders, bringing in some high esters never really found in any Scotch whisky. It has to be tasted to be believed.”
- Glen Moray 12 Year Old (Speyside) – (59.70% ABV; 700ml; $135 SRP)
12 years in ex-bourbon barrel
“Single casks from Glen Moray never disappoint. In selecting this cask we wanted to highlight what we thought Glen Moray does best: Huge fruits and a wonderful creamy quality. This is classic Glen Moray taken to 11.”
