    What’s Happening With Clynelish?

The world of Clynelish independent bottlings is getting smaller, and prices are climbing. Even the heavyweights like Gordon & MacPhail and Signatory rarely bottle this liquid these days. Known for its signature waxy character, that trademark texture is notably absent in this particular release, making it stand out quite dramatically in the world of Clynelish.

At the same time, Diageo’s investment in the distillery, including the new visitor center and the reopening of Brora, has driven even more demand. That’s created a bit of a problem. Independent bottlings of Clynelish are now more expensive and harder to come by. And when the biggest drinks company in the world is placing so much emphasis (and budget) on the distillery, it’s understandable that independent bottlers may be holding back. But with that comes the broader challenge of cask management: how do you handle liquid that’s this old, this sought-after, and this valuable?

What Makes the Halcyon Clynelish Different?

The cask this whisky matured in is something special. We don’t know much about it, but it’s clearly allowed the spirit to evolve slowly and beautifully, developing notes of tropical fruit and subtle herbaceousness. Think apricot, mango, basil, and thyme. In terms of flavor profile, this is about as close to a culinary experience as whiskey gets.

What Makes the Clynelish Halcyon Special?

Yes, it’s a premium bottle. But I wouldn’t place it in the collector’s cabinet, at least not until someone gives it a gold medal or names it their ‘Whiskey of the Year’. This is a treat. And a rare, genuine one at that. It tastes different. It’s contextually affordable when you consider it’s a single cask, three-decade-old Clynelish. If you’re a true fan of old, balanced whiskies, this is one to buy and enjoy, not just admire on a shelf.
