Misunderstood Whiskey Co., which began in a kitchen in Montclair, NJ, by two whiskey enthusiasts looking to create a whiskey that could be enjoyed by drinkers who don’t drink whiskey neat and those who don’t drink whiskey at all. They hoped that by creating a line of infused whiskey, they could bring more people into the world of whiskey drinking.
They were on to something. Misunderstood bottled its first whiskey in 2017 and has since carved out its unique identity in the spirits industry by embracing the unconventional. Their first whiskey, a ginger-spiced infused bourbon, was well received. If you’re a whiskey purist, continue reading, please, because there are merits to flavored whiskey. Imagine, instead of making a cocktail, you can just pour yourself an infused whiskey over ice, and you’ve got something a little different in your glass without any effort. And today’s flavored whiskey offerings are crafted with high-quality ingredients by individuals with discerning palates.
Misunderstood Whiskey Orange Blossom Bourbon was distilled at the Ross & Squibb distillery in Indiana. Per the brand, the mashbill is 99% corn and aged in char #4 barrels. The aged bourbon is blended with premium orange blossom honey, steam-distilled citrus, and all-natural botanical extracts. There is no age statement on the bottle.
Is it any good? Let’s find out.
Misunderstood Orange Blossom Bourbon Review
The aroma is orange and floral forward, as one would expect from an orange blossom bourbon. Vanilla and honey are also easy to detect, and all of the aromas smell natural and not chemicalized, which is a valid concern when trying flavored or infused spirits. As lovely as the aromas are, they do not dominate the overall aroma of the bourbon; I know that I have bourbon in my glass.
The texture is velvety and creamy, with warm honey and vanilla notes hitting the palate alongside the flavors of orange peel. On the midpalate, dried apricots and fresh ginger emerge, accompanied by caramel and floral notes in the finish. The mouthfeel does not disappoint, the flavors were well-balanced, and the finish is longer than expected.
If you have an open mind to flavored and infused whiskey, give this bottle a try. If you’ve already decided against the merits of flavored bourbon, you’re missing out. This bourbon is an excellent pour for new whiskey drinkers and would be fantastic in cocktails. I made an old fashioned by adding three shakes of aromatic bitters to 3 ounces of Orange Blossom Bourbon over a king cube, with no simple syrup, and it was fantastic. If you’re a cocktail lover, this bourbon will work great in an array of cocktails. As a fan of whiskey sours, this bourbon was an excellent choice for use as a base.
Misunderstood Whiskey’s Orange Blossom Bourbon successfully bridges the gap between traditional whiskey enthusiasts and those looking for something new and exciting. It offers a balanced blend of flavors that will appeal to a wide range of palates, making it a versatile addition to any home bar.
