As the year wraps up, it is time to name my picks for the best whiskies of 2025. My approach is simple: focus entirely on flavour. Forget chasing trends or astronomical prices. The goal is to find the perfect dram for every palate, whether you want to replicate the sensation of smashing apples on your forehead or licking a recently used barbecue. With five distinct flavour profiles in mind, I have sorted through this year’s offerings and have zero regrets about my choices.
In the fruit and floral category, one bottle stands above the rest: Glencadam 10. I admit I slept on this whisky for far too long. It is the quiet assassin of Scotch, delivering a profile that is both gentle and impactful. On the nose, you will find bright orchard fruits, lemon skin, and a nostalgic sweetness reminiscent of foamy banana sweets. The palate is just as delightful, with crisp pears and a wonderful malty character. It is delicate and accessible without ever being boring, a whisky I would recommend to anyone.
For those who prefer a bold, smoky experience, my top peat and smoked selection is the Ardnahoe 6 Year Old Aquavitae. A six year old whisky should not feel this composed, yet this dram from one of Islay’s newest distilleries is truly special. The experience is like my childhood memories of bonfires on pebble beaches. It delivers a sweet and salty peat smoke, balanced by bright citrus, vanilla cream soda, and that pure coastal character I just love. It is simply banging stuff, proving that a whisky’s age is no true measure of its quality.
From the quietly brilliant to the boldly coastal, these whiskies represent the best of their respective styles this year. They prove that excellence in whisky comes in many forms, each offering a unique and memorable experience. My list is set, but the conversation is just beginning. What were the bottles that truly stood out for you in 2025?
