A few years back, I made a list of my favourite 12-year-old Scotch whiskies, and when I rewatched it recently, I was genuinely embarrassed. It was packed with 43% bottles that I simply would not reach for today. So I decided to start fresh with one firm rule: nothing on this list dips below 46% ABV. That is the threshold I hold myself to these days, and it felt only fair to apply it here too. Every whisky I am about to mention is available right now, and I have done my best to weigh quality against what you are actually paying.

Before the countdown, a word on the ones that did not quite make it. The Macallan 12 at 110 proof, the Bunnahabhain 12 Cask Strength, and the Springbank 12 Cask Strength would all have ranked highly, with the Springbank likely taking my top spot. The trouble is availability. If you cannot reasonably get your hands on a bottle, it does not belong on a practical list like this one.

Working up from number ten, my picks reflect a constant balancing act between flavour and value for dollar. The Edradour 10 Caledonian and the Benriach 12 are solid but a touch pricey for what they deliver, while the Balblair 12 impresses with its bourbon and sherry cask blend. The Loch Lomond 12 would have placed higher if it were not for the added colour, a small thing that still bugs me.

The Deanston 12 is a dependable daily performer, and the Tobermory 12 offers real character at a fair price. Then come the heavy hitters. The Lagavulin 12 is near and dear to my heart, though its price kept it at number four. The Bunnahabhain 12 is a year after year overachiever and tremendous bang for your buck, while the Kilkerran 12, the closest thing to a Springbank you will find, claimed second place thanks to my soft spot for Campbeltown.

My number one is The GlenAllachie 12. It is my go-to recommendation for beginners and seasoned drinkers alike, versatile, generous, and perfect for the Christmas season. At its regular price it is worth every penny, and on sale it becomes a no-brainer. It is, quite simply, a beauty.

That is my list, built honestly around availability, strength, and value. So tell me, what 12-year-old would have made your cut?
