Maryland’s distillers are joining forces to reclaim their state’s position in American whiskey history. The Maryland Distillers Guild has launched a new ‘Rye Curious’ campaign designed to spotlight the history and tradition of Maryland rye whiskey, the state’s official spirit.

To mark the campaign’s launch, Baltimore Spirits Co., McClintock Distilling, and Sagamore Spirits have created a special collaborative blend.

Rye Curious Blend

The inaugural ‘Rye Curious’ blend will be exclusively available this Sunday, May 18th, at two locations: Baltimore Spirits Co. in Baltimore and McClintock Distilling in Frederick. Each venue will offer just 150 bottles at $79.99, with purchases limited to one per customer. The release begins at noon.

“This blend of Maryland rye whiskies is an opportunity to showcase the different approaches distillers in Maryland have taken to make their own rye whiskey and how well those flavors blend together in one inspiring bottle,” explains Maryland Distillers Guild president Eli Breitburg-Smith. 

Future Expansion Plans

While the initial release features whiskey from three producers, the campaign aims to eventually highlight all of Maryland’s nearly 20 rye whiskey producers. Future editions of the ‘Rye Curious’ blend will incorporate additional distillers’ contributions.

The collaborative ‘Rye Curious’ whiskey exemplifies classic Maryland rye characteristics. Tasting notes include a nose of cherry, citrus, and dried apricot, with a palate featuring warm baking spices, caramel, and vanilla touches.

Breitburg-Smith, who also serves as Head Distiller and Co-Founder at Baltimore Spirits Co., emphasizes the campaign’s educational mission: “We think all spirit connoisseurs in Maryland should be ‘Rye Curious’ and learn about the important place Maryland rye whiskey holds in history and the new golden era we are experiencing with talented distillers around the state.”
