Remarkably, in just 20 years a distillery from Yilan County, Taiwan, rewrote the global whisky map. Consequently, Kavalan, a name now synonymous with excellence, has reached the pinnacle of whisky achievement: Whisky of the Year at the 2025 International Whisky Competition (IWC).
Clearly, this is not a tale of overnight success. Rather, it is a masterclass in deliberate excellence and relentless innovation. Notably, Kavalan’s crowning achievement came with their Solist Fino Sherry Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky, scoring 97.04 points, placing it in the top five highest-rated whiskies in IWC history and marking the first time a non-Scottish distillery claimed this prestigious honor.
The Jim Swan Influence
Initially, Kavalan’s ascent began with a strategic partnership that would define its trajectory. Initially, when the King Car Group sought to launch Taiwan’s first whisky distillery, they turned to Dr. Jim Swan, a legendary whisky consultant renowned for pioneering rapid maturation techniques in warm climates.
Importantly, Dr. Swan, a chemist by training and graduate of Heriot-Watt University, was a global authority in maturation. Furthermore, specializing in gas chromatography and wood science, he conducted major maturation research at Inveresk/Pentlands and the Scotch Whisky Research Institute.
As a result, his research on oak cask interactions and climate-driven aging transformed how new world distilleries approached whisky production. Specifically, at Kavalan, he tailored techniques that harmonized with Taiwan’s hot and humid subtropical climate, resulting in complex and richly flavored whiskies matured in a fraction of the time it would take in Scotland.
Leadership Transitions: Ian Chang and Zerose Yang
Consequently, Dr. Swan’s methods were brought to life and expanded upon by Ian Chang, who joined Kavalan in 2005 and was personally mentored by Swan for over a decade. Under Chang’s stewardship, Kavalan secured numerous international accolades, including the 2015 World’s Best Single Malt for its Solist Vinho Barrique.
Following Chang’s departure in 2020 to lead Japan’s Komoro Distillery, Kavalan appointed Zerose Yang, its Head of R&D, to carry the torch. Moreover, Yang has taken innovation even further, refining production and driving award-winning releases that continue to dominate the global stage.
At the IWC 2025, Kavalan earned:
- Whisky of the Year
- Distillery of the Year
- Master Distiller of the Year (Zerose Yang)
This marks only the third time in IWC history that a single Master Distiller/Blender has captured all three top accolades in one year. In fact, the only others to achieve this rare feat were:
- Dr. Bill Lumsden (Glenmorangie & Ardbeg)
- Stephanie MacLeod (Bacardi Scotch Whisky)
Kavalan: A Meteoric Rise
Historically, founded in 2005, Kavalan released its first whisky in 2008. The whisky world was skeptical. Naturally, could a Taiwanese distillery compete with centuries-old Scotch and Japanese icons?
Thus, the answer came swiftly.
Subsequently, by 2010, Kavalan stunned judges at the Burns Night blind tasting in Scotland, where it outperformed several prominent Scottish single malts.

Yet, the International Whisky Competition stands apart. Kavalan has previously won Distillery of the Year multiple times—more than any other producer in the competition’s history—and has come remarkably close to winning Whisky of the Year, including a notable second-place finish in a previous edition.
What Makes the IWC So Prestigious?
Clearly, the IWC is heralded as “The Olympics of Whisky Competitions” for a reason. Since its restructuring in 2015, it has employed a rigorous double-blind tasting system judged by an elite panel of master distillers, blenders, and certified spirits judges.
Unlike competitions that hand out medals liberally, the IWC awards only three medals per category, and each whisky is judged on 15 strict criteria.
“Winning ‘Whisky of the Year’ at the IWC is not luck. It’s a culmination of craftsmanship, technique, and an unwavering commitment to quality,” says Stephen Beal, Sr. Master of Whiskey.
Significantly, Kavalan didn’t just enter a single star product—they boldly submitted their entire range. Indeed, very few distilleries are audacious enough to do so. Yet, Kavalan maintained an astonishing weighted average score of 91.45 points across their submissions. That feat alone—under such rigorous conditions—cements their reputation and secured their Distillery of the Year award.

Tasting Notes – Adam Edmonsond, Master of Whisky, Council of Whiskey Masters:
- Nose: A beautifully elegant and richly fruited nose. Big sherry notes with dark fruits, black cherry, and fig. Hints of black coffee, prunes, and molasses.
- Palate: Concentrated, viscous, and mouth-coating. Loaded with dried fruits, gingerbread, and blackcurrants. Plenty of body and alcohol to balance the sweetness. Big and bold.
- Finish: Exceptionally long and dry with coffee, spices, dark chocolate, and warming wood tannins.
Why It Matters
Kavalan’s win is a turning point in whisky history. It signals that excellence knows no borders, and that innovation paired with expertise can outpace tradition.
Dr. Jim Swan may have passed in 2017, but his legacy lives on in every drop Kavalan produces. From Ian Chang’s masterful blending to Zerose Yang’s innovation-forward approach, Kavalan continues to set the standard for what modern whisky can be.
