Holland America Line and Jefferson’s Bourbon have announced a first-of-its-kind partnership to age Jefferson’s Ocean Bourbon aboard all 11 ships in the cruise line’s fleet. The collaboration, revealed on International Whiskey Day on March 27, 2026, marks the distillery’s first venture aging bourbon with a cruise line partner.
Beginning in March 2026, Jefferson’s loaded one barrel aboard each Holland America Line vessel. By the end of April 2026, all 11 ships will carry their own exclusive barrel.
Each barrel will sail for a minimum of six months. During that time, the bourbon will be exposed to shifting climates, rolling waves, ocean air, and the constant motion of the ship.
The partnership expands Holland America Line’s existing Single Barrel Program and serves as a milestone in the cruise line’s America’s 250th celebration, themed “The Spirit of Independence.”
“This partnership with Jefferson’s Bourbon is another way we’re setting ourselves apart through experiences that are too good to hurry through,” said Drew Foulk, director of food and beverage revenue and innovation at Holland America Line. “Aging bourbon aboard our ships and offering it exclusively back to guests later reflects our commitment to beverage programs that are shaped by the journey itself.”
Once the barrels complete their ocean aging, they will be bottled and returned to the ships. Each limited-edition barrel is expected to yield approximately 150 to 300 bottles, with the first bottles available to guests onboard in 2027.
Guests will also be able to follow the aging process through onboard activations, including educational tastings designed to show how a ship’s itinerary shapes the spirit.
The concept of aging bourbon at sea originated with Jefferson’s founder Trey Zoeller, who wondered how constant motion, salt air, and dramatic temperature shifts might influence the liquid. Jefferson’s has now completed 35 bottled voyages on cargo and fishing vessels before expanding to Holland America Line’s global fleet.
Zoeller founded Jefferson’s Bourbon in 1997 alongside his father, Chet, a respected bourbon historian. The brand traces its family legacy back eight generations to Trey’s ancestor, one of the first women officially documented for her involvement in making American whiskey.
“We are thrilled to partner with Holland America Line to embark on a truly unique adventure,” said Zoeller. “By placing Jefferson’s Ocean barrels on their cruise ships, we’re diving into a quest to see how different routes and voyages — meaning different climates and agitation — influence the taste, smell, and mouthfeel of our whiskey.”
He continued: “I truly appreciate Holland America’s dedication to experimentation and innovation, allowing us to craft a one-of-a-kind experience for their guests. The whiskey they enjoy will be exclusive to their ships, available only once the voyage is complete. Jefferson’s Ocean is a true treasure to savor and share.”
The Jefferson’s collaboration is one of several brand partnerships Holland America Line has assembled for its America’s 250th program. The cruise line has also partnered with Crane stationery and Pendleton Woolen Mills on limited-edition onboard offerings.
A dedicated America’s 250th Celebration: Stars and Stripes cruise will depart Boston on July 4, 2026, featuring a late-night departure so guests can view the city’s fireworks display from the water. Additional co-branded collaborations are expected to be unveiled ahead of that milestone date.
