Family-owned whisky specialist Gordon & MacPhail is set to launch a new retail shop and tasting rooms at The Courtyard on Newmill Road, Elgin, located within the Johnstons of Elgin site. The new venue welcomed its first customers on Saturday, March 1, offering visitors an enhanced, interactive whisky experience.
The carefully designed space, created in collaboration with local contractors including Forteath & Sinclair, Campbell McHardy, and Hendersons Decorators, will showcase Gordon & MacPhail’s extensive whisky collection, including some of the world’s rarest expressions.
Premium Offering Maintains Local Heritage
The new location will feature Gordon & MacPhail’s acclaimed whisky portfolio alongside award-winning Benromach Single Malts and Red Door Gin. Visitors will also find the company’s innovative CRN57° Blended Malt whisky range.
CRN57° represents a unique opportunity for whisky enthusiasts to “taste the future today,” with flavor profiles designed to preview what consumers can expect from the first releases from Gordon & MacPhail’s The Cairn Distillery in coming years.
The shop will maintain the impressive selection previously available at the company’s South Street emporium and St Giles venues, including exceptional scotch whiskies, Scottish gins, vodkas, and rums, alongside quality wines and international spirits.
Commitment to Elgin Despite Challenges
Phillip White, Chief Executive of Gordon & MacPhail, explained the strategic move: “This is a new offering that we are exceptionally proud of. Our investment here reflects our long-term commitment to Elgin – the place of our company’s beginnings over a century ago.”
White acknowledged how unexpected developments led to the new opportunity: “The recent closure of St Giles shopping centre was unexpected but presented an opportunity to evaluate our options as to how best we can serve our customers and community. The Courtyard at Johnstons of Elgin at Newmill offers visitors a premium retail experience with plenty of space and a lovely café just next door, making it the ideal space for our temporary Whisky Experience and retail offering while our South Street premises continue to undergo renovation.”
The partnership brings together two historic family businesses with global reach. Chris Gaffney, CEO of Johnstons of Elgin, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “Johnstons are delighted to welcome Gordon & MacPhail to Newmill. It’s a great match of two family companies that have a worldwide customer base and iconic products made in Moray. I’m sure it will give guests from near and far even more of a reason to visit us.”
Gordon & MacPhail Newmill Road is now open to visitors as of 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025. For more information, visit www.gordonandmacphail.com/book-a-tasting.
