When you think of peated Scotch, a few legendary names probably come to mind: Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin 16, and Laphroaig 10. They are all fantastic, smoky staples of the whisky world. Yet, as we enter prime time for peaty drams, I found that none of those classics made it into my personal top ten. Instead, I decided to take on the challenge of rummaging through my collection and ranking the bottles that truly excite me right now.

A key factor for me is exceptional value. A whisky doesn’t need a high price tag to be a standout. The Ledaig Rioja Cask Finish is a perfect example. This heavily peated release from Tobermory distillery offers a brilliant mix of juicy red fruits and earthy, briny smoke. It can often be found for around the 30 quid mark, which is simply fantastic value. It’s one of the rare few bottles that I find myself purchasing again and again, proving that a brilliant peated whisky can be both complex and accessible.

Of course, a great peated whisky must also deliver on complexity. I’m drawn to drams that offer more than just a blast of smoke. Consider the Ardbeg Uigeadail, a sherry and peat powerhouse that consistently exceeds my expectations. Matured in a marriage of bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, this is a meaty, mighty beast of a whisky. The classic dirty Ardbeg smoke is there, but it’s beautifully balanced with sweet and savoury notes of plum sauce and smoked barbecue. It’s a bold, enthralling experience that demonstrates how peat and sherry can create something truly special.

Beyond the liquid itself, I have a deep appreciation for distilleries that champion transparency. The Port Charlotte 10 from Bruichladdich is perhaps one of the best representations of Islay Scotch on the market today. It is a bold, maritime banger, but the distillery also provides a full breakdown of its cask recipe. You know exactly what you’re getting: an honest, non-chill-filtered whisky at a solid 50% ABV with no funny business. It’s a philosophy that builds trust and a quality that speaks for itself in the glass.

Ultimately, this list is a snapshot of my shelf and my palate at this moment. It champions whiskies that offer a powerful combination of flavour, value, and integrity. While the iconic names will always have their place, the world of peated whisky is full of incredible bottles that dare to do something different. What’s the one peated whisky you feel deserves more attention?
