We have all been there. Staring at the supermarket whisky aisle, we grab a familiar name only to feel a pang of buyer’s remorse later. After years of exploring this hobby, I have made more than a few of these missteps. My goal now is simple: to help you level up your collection by identifying smarter, better value alternatives to the usual suspects, proving that a great dram does not have to be painfully expensive.

Let’s begin with blended Scotch, the entry point for many. While a bottle like Johnnie Walker Red Label is a worldwide staple, I must confess I have never connected with its flavour profile. Rather than settling, a small price bump to the Black Label offers significantly more depth and a touch of smoke. For true value hunters, however, a blend like Teacher’s Highland Cream or Black Bottle’s Smoke and Dagger often provides a much more characterful experience for a similar, or even lower, price.

This principle of seeking better value applies directly to single malts. Consider the entry-level Jura expressions, a prime supermarket staple. While popular, they are often presented at a basic 40% ABV with chill filtration and added colour. For just a few pounds more, the re-released Jura 12 Year Old is a much better step up. If you are willing to invest slightly more for a huge leap in quality, a naturally presented whisky like Ardnamurchan AD packs bags of flavour and complexity that the basic offerings simply cannot match.

This philosophy is not limited to Scotch. Think of the classic Jameson Irish Whiskey. It is a perfectly serviceable pour, but for a mere couple of pounds more, the Jameson Stout Edition transforms the experience. The cask finish adds wonderful layers of fruit and cream, elevating a standard pour into something far more interesting. It is a brilliant example of how a small, smart upgrade can make a massive difference to what is in your glass.

Ultimately, building a great collection is not about spending the most money; it is about spending it wisely. The whisky world is full of hidden gems that outperform the marketing giants. By looking just beyond the most familiar labels, you can find bottles that deliver superior flavor and value for every pound spent. What are some of your favorite budget-friendly upgrades?
