Just in time for my favorite time of year, Spooky Season, the shelves have a bottle bearing the name “Ghostwood Bourbon” on them. The company’s marketing speaks more to cowboys than specters, but that’s okay. Check out the bottle image. That more than matches it to October in my book.
Ghostwood is a blend of sourced bourbon, with an aggregate mash bill of 52% corn, 30% rye, 10% wheat and 8% malted barley. That points to a combination based on traditional bourbon, but with some wheated bourbon added in, and technically makes it a blended four-grain whiskey. This is bottled at 90 proof. The company owns and operates a distillery in Montana, but this reportedly does not use their in-house whiskey.
The Bourbon
Ghostwood pours as a dull coppered looking bourbon. I found the nose airy, leading with a blend of cookie spices mixed with some freshly chopped peppermint over a base of toffee. The palate was an equal light touch. The flavor turned to candy corn and vanilla, while retaining a little peppermint. The conclusion opened with a little bite of spice, before rolling over to oak and peanuts.
