The Macallan has unveiled  – a rare single cask whisky celebrating Mexico’s vibrant Day of the Dead festival, with only two bottles in existence. The Macallan Distil Your World Mexico Single Cask Limited Edition, available exclusively through Sotheby’s auction house, offers collectors the opportunity to acquire bottle #2 of 2, with the first bottle permanently housed in The Macallan’s archive in Speyside, Scotland.

Bidding opened March 5 and continues through March 21, with estimates ranging from $30,000 to $80,000. You can place your bids, or keep an eye on the auction, here

The Macallan Distil Your World Mexico Single Cask Limited Edition represents a luxurious upgrade to the standard Distil Your World Mexico, which was launched in November 2023.

    A Celebration of Mexican Culture

The single malt whisky was created in collaboration with the Roca brothers of the three-Michelin-starred restaurant El Celler de Can Roca. Whisky Maker Diane Stuart worked alongside Joan Roca to explore the cultural significance of Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebration.

Their journey involved meetings with notable Mexican cultural figures, including acclaimed chef Elena Reygadas of Panaderia Rosetta, Josefina Garcia from the Dolores Olmedo Museum, and Luis Perez, a cultivator of Mexican marigold flowers – the iconic bloom associated with Day of the Dead celebrations.

Geoff Kirk, Channel Director Secondary Market at The Macallan shared, “This exclusive auction of the Distil Your World Mexico Single Cask Limited Edition marks another milestone in our ongoing partnership with Sotheby’s, blending the artistry of exceptional whisky-making with a  deep respect for culture.”

The resulting whisky was drawn from a single American oak sherry seasoned butt (Cask No. 1964) filled on February 10, 2005. Bottled at 54.9% ABV, it displays a natural deep marigold color that visually connects to the festival’s traditional flowers.

According to the official tasting notes, the whisky offers “fruity notes of pineapple, grapefruit and apple with intense orange peel” on the nose, alongside “crème brulee and cinnamon spice.”

The palate delivers “creamy dulce de leche, cinnamon dusted churros and almonds tumbled in caramelized sugar,” balanced with “rich vanilla pod and charred pineapple.” The finish is described as “long, and sweet with tropical fruits, rich oak and dark chocolate.”

    Charitable Impact

All proceeds from the charitable auctioning of The Macallan Disitil Your World Mexico Single Cask will benefit Esperanza International, an organization supporting home building and community development in Mexico.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Head of Whisky & Spirits, North America and EMEA, commented: “The Distil Your World Mexico Single Cask Limited Edition is a rare offering that combines exceptional whisky, stunning artwork, and a powerful philanthropic purpose. Sotheby’s is delighted to partner with The Macallan, once again, to present this unique opportunity to collectors.”

The Mexico edition follows previous Distil Your World releases celebrating London and New York City, each designed to capture the essence of these global cultural capitals through the art of whisky craftsmanship.
