Bruce Joseph, a cornerstone figure in American craft distilling, announced his retirement from San Francisco’s Hotaling & Co., marking the end of a transformative era in craft spirits production. Joseph will transition to the role of Master Distiller Emeritus and distillery consultant effective Feb. 13, 2025.

Joseph’s journey began in October 1980 at Anchor Brewing Company, where his initial focus on brewing would eventually lead to pioneering developments in craft distilling.

    A Legacy of Innovation

In 1993, Joseph became the first full-time distiller at what was then known as Anchor Distilling (now Hotaling & Co.). His innovative spirit led to the creation of several groundbreaking products that helped establish America’s craft spirits movement.

Among his notable achievements are Old Potrero Rye Whiskey and Junipero Gin, both introduced in 1996, as well as Old Potrero Holtaling’s Whiskey (2006), Genevieve Gin (2007), JH Cutter Whiskey (2018), and the Old Potrero Christmas Spirit (2024). These spirits helped catalyze the American craft whiskey and gin movements respectively.

Recognition and Future Role at Hotaling & Co.

The Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. recognized Joseph’s contributions to the industry with the Distinguished Service Award in 2023.

“As I reflect on my career over the last 45 years, beginning as a young brewer at Anchor, I realize how fortunate I was to have a ringside seat for not only the craft brewing revolution, but the rebirth of craft distilling, too,” says Joseph. “I could never have predicted that a secret project I worked on with Fritz Maytag would prove so pivotal in helping foster the robust craft spirits scene we enjoy today. We developed our whiskey and gin from a place of true inspiration and creativity, and as we brought them to production, Fritz ingrained in all of us that quality is paramount, a bedrock principle that continues to guide us today.

“I’m proud and honored to have played a role in creating our groundbreaking Anchor/Hotaling & Co. products in the beautiful city of San Francisco, the perfect setting for our innovative array of spirits. And I’m so grateful to all my colleagues through the years and to my family for supporting me in this amazing journey.”

Hotaling & Co. CEO Dan Leese praised Joseph’s impact: “Bruce’s legacy is one of innovation and excellence, and we are honored to continue building on the incredible groundwork he laid. While we will miss his daily presence, we are thrilled to celebrate his remarkable career and look forward to his continued guidance as Master Distiller Emeritus.”
